Rock & Waste Glaze Workshop

$290.00

Exploring local materials in glaze

There’s a whole world of glaze materials under our feet, waiting in rock, soil and the things most people throw away. This workshop is about discovering and transforming overlooked materials into usable glaze ingredients. It’s designed for makers who want to connect their work more closely to place and better understand what really makes a glaze.

Working from the studio, you’ll be introduced to a selection of locally foraged materials alongside hospitality waste such as shells, glass and bone. We’ll look at how these materials are identified in the landscape, what to look for when collecting, and the ways they can be processed into glaze ingredients.

You’ll then get hands-on with crushing, milling and sieving materials, preparing found sources safely, and testing them through triaxial blends. Along the way we’ll cover Tasmania’s geology, ethics of collecting, material stories and how local materials can be substituted for commercial ones in glaze recipes.

This workshop suits anyone with a ceramics practice, from beginners to experienced makers wanting to deepen their understanding of glaze. All materials and testing are provided with fired results shared two weeks later. You’ll leave with practical skills, a stronger understanding of glaze testing and more confidence to begin sourcing, processing and testing your own materials.

When and where?

9am-1pm
27A Tasma Street, North Hobart
